Firstly, be prepared for your GP and some Neurologists not to have either heard about this disease or question its existence.
We encourage you to go prepared for your appointment.
• Be clear about your symptoms
• Ask your GP for the TG6 antibody test
• Take (gluten ataxia info sheet) with you.
• Take (HOW TO GET THE TEST) to your GP
In a recent UK study, 67% of people newly diagnosed with coeliac disease had at least one of these symptoms. Those with TG6 antibodies were more likely to show changes on brain scans, including signs of damage in the part of the brain that controls movement and coordination.
Firstly its important to get an official diagnosis because you will be monitored for your progress
• Annual TG6 test and bloods
• Annual MRI brain and MRI spectroscopy scan
• Wider support through dieticians, Ataxia nurses and specialist physios
From these results you will have a clearer way forward.
• After a year without gluten, many people’s symptoms (like headaches and balance problems) got better.
• Their brain scans also showed some improvements.
If you or someone you know experiences unexplained balance problems, headaches, or neurological symptoms especially alongside digestive issues a simple blood test could help.
• Coeliac disease
• TG6 antibodies (if available)
The sooner gluten sensitivity is identified, the sooner steps can be taken to protect your health and wellbeing.
